Alternate History - Soviet War 1983With the election of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in 1979, and American President Ronald Reagan in 1980, a corresponding change in Western foreign policy approach toward the Soviet Union was marked by the rejection of détente in favor of the Reagan Doctrine policy of rollback, with the stated goal of dissolving Soviet influence in Soviet Bloc countries. During this time, the threat of nuclear war had reached new heights not seen since the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.
Tensions increased when the U.S. announced they would deploy Pershing II missiles in West Germany, followed by Reagan's announcement of the U.S. Strategic Defense Initiative and were further exacerbated in 1983 when Reagan branded the Soviet Union an "evil empire".
In April 1983, the United States Navy conducted FleetEx '83-1, the largest fleet exercise held to date in the North Pacific. The conglomeration of approximately forty ships with 23,000 crewmembers and 300 aircraft, was arguably the most powerful naval armada ever assembled. U.S. aircraft and ships attempted to provoke the Soviets into reacting, allowing U.S. Naval Intelligence to study Soviet radar characteristics, aircraft capabilities, and tactical maneuvers. On April 4, at least six U.S. Navy aircraft flew over one of the Kurile Islands, Zeleny Island, the largest of a set of islets called the Habomai Islands. The Soviets were outraged and ordered a retaliatory overflight of the Aleutian Islands.
In November 1983, NATO conducted a military exercise known as "Able Archer 83". The realistic simulation of an attack by NATO forces caused considerable alarm in the USSR prompting a very real counter attack and subsequent push into Western Germany. Although prepared for a Soviet attack, NATO had not anticipated the aggressiveness and speed of which the Soviets would push.
December 2, 1983, with Germany largely lost, NATO issues an immediate evacuation of all ground troops from West Germany to Belgium and France.
December 6, 1983, Western Germany
Underequipped and hastily prepared UK and US Marines held the line while the remaining NATO forces pulled out of West Germany.
January 23, 1984, Western Germany
With Western Germany now lost, NATO forces began mobilising in mass for a counter attack to retake lost territory. British commando elements successfully inserted before the main force and destroyed key air assets and targets prior to the invasion.
January 25, 1984, Western Germany
After a series of successful commando raids, British marines were able to temporarily cripple Soviet air superiority over West Germany - allowing for the US lead 3rd Armored Division to spearhead the NATO counter attack. Soviet forces caught off guard have began to pull their forces north to reestablish a defensive line in an attempt to stop the NATO push. British force reconnaissance elements have been tasked with intercepting key Soviet targets as they attempt to withdraw ahead of the NATO offensive. West German resistance have successfully identified two MAZ-543's preparing to move north and link with elements of the 5th Guards Tank Division with support from the 154th Oospn.
February 4, 1984, Western Germany
After a series of successful NATO commando raids knocking out key Soviet defensive positions, the US lead 3rd Armored Division has spearheaded the main NATO counter attack. British SBS reconnaissance teams have been deployed north, deep within occupied Soviet territory to observe Russian movements and report any signs of a imminent counter attack.
February 4, 1984, Western Germany
Following a successful reconnaissance patrol, 1 Troop were able to determine Soviet forces preparing for an imminent southern offensive. Soviet air has regained control of the AO, followed by a massive push from the north. The bulk of Soviet forces will enter the AO at approximately 0955, rapidly moving south to intercept NATO forces.
