You buy packages to get you into the game in pre-alpha stage (basically early access) if you want better ships you pay more money. When the game comes out or reaches a later stage of development you won't be able to do this anymore and have to play the game to get the ships.
Don't see why people don't jsut buy the basic starter game package because buying you way further into a game is liek paying more money for less of the gameplay but I suppose people can do what they like.
But some games take the absolute biscuit when it comes to grinding (Elite Dangerous, I'm looking at you) so you have to pay mega money not to spend the next 6 months grinding away for the next vehicle (don't stand there looking all sheepish World of Tanks)
