We were having this discussion last night, following the mid-week op where it was at night and raining.  NVG's were pretty awful, and in a few situations the visibility was worse with them than without them.

It became apparent that whether you like or dislike the more realistic effects, the implementation is somewhat broken for some weather conditions.

Having said that, IMO, we had a couple of encounters that were extremely immersive using the new NVGs, that would have been so easy using the original ones that it would have been trivial.  In one encounter we actually had to withdraw two sections from contact, and flank the enemy, because we could not win the firefight against approximately an equal number of AI.  It was great, for once we had to use "real" tactics at night.

A lot of the issues, stem from the moon phase and weather.  If the mission designer leaves these to chance, then NVGs can be virtually useless.  If its full moon and clear sky, then the new NVGs are very similar to the original ones.

I've spoken to Gruppe Adler and they also have similar issues / concerns about the new NVGs.

The settings were updated again last night across all servers, to improve the NVGs.  We'll continue to monitor the feedback, and also to do some further testing.

Clearly on the public server. we need to be a little careful.  We'll take a look at the missions and ensure that the moon-phase is more favourable to NVGs

ahh cheers for that lifetap clears a few things up and we may be able to make them better for the public by just changing weather conditions a little as obviously this is more of a chance occurrence on the public

Yes, exactly.  If we fix the moon-phase, then Zeus can adjust the weather if its too dark or too light

IRL NVGs are actually pretty bad. You basically can not read anything, and the NVGs themselves are only good for looking out (still "frizzles"), but not reading or anything that requires concentration. Asked a US Marine I know, here's a few comments he said:
"If it's shi***and washed out and you can't read anything, then it's probably good lol"
"Playing with the focus is the hard part. IRL if you want to read s**t up close you're better off just taking the NVGs off and using a red light, and to read my clipboard I would have to just take the thing off entirely." Here's some pictures he put of himself using the NVGs while on training exercise (hes a UAV operator). This is him calling a "sparkle" on himself (asking aircraft to put IR laser on him)

NVG's have been adjusted again, following some more in-depth testing.
