Poll: how interested are you on completing objectives?

Hi guys. I'm looking for feedback from our public players and members on how interested in completing the mission objectives (the ones with little icons that show in the tasks on the map screen) you are when playing on the public server? I guess what I'm trying to say is whether you view achieving/completing those tasks as the reason you're there, or a way of focusing attention in an area and the main objective is to kill the enemy. (Obviously the main point of being on the server is to have fun!)

The reason I ask is I am working on a new mission which already has a number of repetitive type tasks "go to x, clear town" for example, with additional unique tasks sprinkled in. Some of these may be quite involved and require additional equipment bringing from the main base, retrieval of unique items back to the base and so on and may have positive/negative consequences if done/not done. They also may not be combat related. There is no point in me trying to code these types of tasks if there is no interest in them, hence this post.

Personally I enjoy complting the objectives, a good scene of achievement is obtained after we've captured a heavily defended FOB. Would love to see some more itrecate and specialised objectives

However, I fell like having multiple task's that require you to have someone bring special gear/items from base to complete that task would get very frustrating, considering there's not usually enough people online to warrant the use of a whisky.
Just my thought's.

And that's what I want. (Thoughts!)

I can imagine that it would be quite frustrating. However the items will be able to be driven out also so it isn't dependent on a helo although it would obviously be quicker to do so. It's not like every task would be like this either. There are currently 3 that I'm thinking of, out of maybe 30+ tasks. But I take on board your reservations.

I always try to do the tasks. On one of the jungle maps, Monsoon Madness(?), there is this deliver water, water tank missions...etc.. I really like those. Spice things up a bit from the usual destroy this or that or take all the never ending FOBs.

Glad you like those, they're on chickenhawk and are similar to what I'm proposing but as above, they will be occasional and not every objective.

@Mustache - I'm intending on some benefits to completing tasks yes. Not every one of course. And the intent here is that there will only be a few active tasks at any time. Often grouped location wise.

The majority of our maps are over saturated with FOBs if we could try and get a bit of variety in the objectives.

Having objectives is a good idea because it gives players goals to work towards. Additionally, having a smörgåsbord board of objectives will help players work towards different solutions when taking on those tasks, which in turn could help to expand their skills in not only lead roles but other roles too. Furthermore, using other elements in support of sections working towards a shared goal is in general good for team work.

i'm personaly not to fond of preset 'goto x kill y' missions, b/c they get stale after a while. but i can see how that appeals to ppl b/c you have a messurable result .... 'hey we've been at X and killed Y =)'

i liked the airfield map where one can create an objective, it had the benefit that the object was scaleable so you can create a different thing when where are 4 ppl on the server ... then when you have 16+ ppl availible

My wet dream is an escalating mission where you charged with something completly different and the mission / task at hands develops in something completely different that you might not be properly prepared for ... go kill officer XYZ, on your way you figure out that he has a bunch of civlians as hostages that you now need to ferry out while the retaliating force is making stuff complicated =)

cheers moeses

ps: A map scale is the size of an object compared to the size of the object's smaller representative on a map. This can be shown by a scale bar and a ratio 1:n. The reader can measure a distance on the map to know what is the distance on the ground.

I think that objectives are important. They define a start and more importantly also the end. This set's the frame in which the players are playing. You can decide that you will stay on the server for 1-2 objectives, or that you would like to switch to another role after a objective.

A finished objective also gives the opportunity to gather players back in the base. There you can do things like filling a single section with players who are in half empty ones etc.

There is no war to end all wars.

They may seem repetitive, but the pre-established objectives provide a direction and purpose. Otherwise it all becomes an endless movement to contact operation, which can, over time, be even more dull for players. I enjoy the objectives being out there.

Hearts and Minds is a wonderful name for a teen romance novel, but I’ve always thought it to be a poor name for a counterinsurgency concept.

Thanks for the responses and thoughts. I think the majority will probably like what I am working on then. Will hopefully be organising a test session for sometime in the near future.
