Suggestion - Basic Repair Abilities

Server / Map: 3CB Public Server

Suggestion/Query: It would be really useful if helicopter pilots had the ability to perform minimal field repairs. Currently unless you land in the servicing area there is no way to repair a damaged heli. This means if you lose engine power, there is no point in attempting an autorotation, with respawning being the only option if you do. I feel there should be some benefit to being able to land safely with no engine power. You should be able to repair just enough to get back to base, rather than having to wait for the heli to not only despawn but then an additional 15 minutes for it to respawn.

Drive a repair HEMTT out to the crashed heli. There is one in every base for this reason.
Heli pilots aren't engineers - they need team-work just like any other unit in the field, so getting your chopper back in the air can be an interesting side mission for players.

Personally I'd like to see more use of engineers.

A heli going down, the pilot needing rescuing and the aircraft being recovered is a mission in itself. use the opportunity for more varied gameplay.

It needs for the heli pilots to play with a certain realism mind-set:

Typical (public server) scenario:
- heli gets damaged and auto-rotates
- pilot blows up chopper so it respawns quicker
- heli pilot respawns back to base and takes another chopper or complains to Zeus that there are none left

Alternative (the 3CB-way) scenario:
- heli gets damaged and auto-rotates
- heli pilot scrambles away from wreckage to nearest cover, radio's in position to Command
- heli pilot evades being captured or killed by avoiding enemy contact until reaching friendly units
- ground Troop organise priority rescue attempt, fighting through to the crash site
- marines pull security while the Engineers / HEMTT / Coyote? fix the heli
- chopper fixed, pilot takes off, has story to tell grand-children when he's old

This is not having a go at you Mr.B, just suggesting how things can be done in a slightly different style and still achieve what you are asking for which is a fixed chopper after soft crash-landing.  :-)

Yeah

I am personally more of a friend of actions that cause a effect, which then require another action.

In this example it means that if a helicopter gets damaged for whatever reasons, it is causing a situation which requires a action on another level.

1. Your helo is damaged to a part where you cant fly it anymore.
2. You need to get a repait vehicle of repait crew to it.
3. Fly it back to base and fully repait it.
4. If you cant get it repaired you have to destroy it and wait until it respawns.

This is also more or less reward based system. Teamwork and coordination will reward you because you dont have to wait until the vehilce respawns back in base.

Pilots being able to repair their own vehicle will make this very flat and in most situations a damaged helicopter got caused by a mistake the pilot made (everyone makes mistakes).

Can repair vehicles also carry fuel or at least a jerry can or two to get the chopper RTB?

One of our pub missions had this as an objective if I remember rightly.

Another option is to attach a 3CB helicopter rearm, resupply, repair module to a vehicle.  This can be done by the mission maker or via Zeus

As far as I know vanilla repair works as following.

1. Park the repair vehicle right next to your target vehicle.
2. Go intro the driver/pilot seat of your target vehicle and xou should have a option for repair in the scroll menu.

There is no war to end all wars.
