The Battle for Athira

The Battle for Athira

One man's account of the action on the 3CB Arma 3 Public Server, afternoon of 19th October 2013.

Chapter 1: The Charge

It all started out so quietly.

Whiplash and Swarfegahead comparing hangovers. Leeobee and Niko competing for the most (friendly) aircraft destroyed. Apollo (SL) and Smithy (B-FTL) discussing tactics.

Tactics.

Such a simple word.
Sometimes complicated to describe. In this case though, perhaps not.

You see, it all started with two small fireteams. Alpha on a hill providing overwatch and Bravo assaulting an outlying farmstead to the east of the main town.

Alpha's snipers engaged and eliminated a small fireteam, while Bravo stormed the farmstead and wiped out the remaining infantry. Then Bravo struck out northwest towards the town, with Alpha still on over-watch.

All was proceeding smoothly as Bravo moved up through the brush... and then all hell opened up in front of them. Three enemy attack helicopters, a main battle tank, two APC's and 4+ infantry fireteams! Bravo didn't last long despite Alpha's covering fire.

Alpha to the rescue? Halfway there and withering fire pinned them down, taking casualties. Someone shouted "let's run away!", and taking the hint Apollo ordered a fighting retreat back to safety, carried out in the most professional manner, 3 men providing suppressing fire, 3 men bounding.

OK, so after a respawn, it was back to the tactics... "Let's try it again". Duh.

This time we stocked up on AT - well, Bravo brought 1 launcher and 7 rockets; it's the thought that counts. The two fireteams regrouped at the farmstead, looking out over the barren plains to our objective of the factory on the northern outskirts of town, ...500m away.

No cover to the front. None to the left or right. Enemies everywhere out to the west.

Tactics?...Alpha and Bravo were formed into a Section line, Alpha on the left, Bravo on the right. A smoke barrage was laid down, "Fix Bayonets" was the order. And then we charged. Into the face of death itself.

"Leeeeeroy Jenkinssss" was the battle cry as we sprinted through the smoke, firing from the hip. Almost half-way, no man down, but the bullets were zipping by. Keep going, 200m more. Explosions. More smoke. An AT missile finds it's target with a deafening boom. Almost to the factory wall now. "Bravo MADE IT!" crackles over the radio; "Alpha KEEP MOVING!".

And then we were there.
Lined up on the outer wall, looking at each other in amazement.
The suicide charge had worked! It shouldn't have. But it did.

Who needs tactics when you have courage in the face of overwhelming fire and trust in the man beside you in the line?

Haha, brilliant. Some fine work on the public server yesterday!
