Wendelstein 7-X

The 7-X has been interesting, because for bloody ages the focus has been on ITER and other tokamak designs as the likely route to eventual break-even on fusion, but in the last year this has just re-emerged into the public eye after a long senescence. It's a fantastically complex design, but the underlying concept is rather more elegant than the "squeeze it harder and harder and pray" approach that the basic tokamak follows.
