TrackIR...

While saving for VR, I have been looking at cheaper alternatives - one option it seems to me is this TrackIR malarkey. However, is it valid?
If I understand it correctly, a sensor to the front detects your head movement and reflects that on the screen i.e. look left, and the monitor displays what's to the left, to reflect head movement. However, it then seems to be that if you are looking to the left, how do you seen what's on the screen?
I imagine I am missing something as people make it work for them, so what have I got wrong?

The degree that the camera turns is normally greater than the degree your head turns. This means that you configure just how far sideways you look to have the camera point back over your shoulder for example, and you configure it to a point where you're still able to rotate your eyes to see the screen comfortably.

It's not a terribly natural motion initially, but I should also warn you that currently VR in Arma is a bit sketchy I've heard, with everything feeling too big and too far away. Was particularly problematic for my pilot friend.

You mean like this?

Thanks for the explanation, it makes sense :)

Ask Parker... He tried mine on Friday - it was new to him, so unbiased review

To be fair TrackIR is "better" for ArmA 3 than any VR Goggles. VR is still making it's baby steps and I think it will be 2-3 years until you can play "normal" games with the same standard of visuals and performance that you can play without them.

Track IR is nice and when you got used to it, you will miss it in all first person games you play.

It's a game changer for me - I love it.

Completely natural for me now. I hate it when I do something else where it's not supported.

Can't wait for VR to get to the level where it's the same, or better, graphically as to where we're at now.

It's going to be bonkers once they've worked out how to compensate for the multitude of keybindings complex games require.

It's worth the price tag. VR won't be ready for atleast a year and it's pricey. Trackir is a big step from nothing. Got for Trackir

His men would follow him anywhere, but only out of curiosity.

+1

I have used many VR helmets and even use one for VBS.  In A3 a large high quality display coupled with trackIR (or equiv) is the way to go.

VR helmets work very well in cockpit style games, where resolution is not critical.

Even the VIVE looks very low res compared to a good display.

Also A3 is not designed for a VR helmet and will likely never be.  You need to be able to maintain 90 fps constantly (without any lag) otherwise attach a sick bag.

I also second Track IR, really makes a difference, I tried playing without it recently and it felt like I was missing a limb. Well worth the money , especially if you are into flight sims etc.
