SSD Help (Buying)

Jamster wrote:
Hello,
Guten Tag

Finally looking to step into the world of SSDs as storage.
A few questions below if anyone wouldn't mind giving an answer.

Is it worth separating windows from everything else on to a separate SSD?
depends on other workloads of your system drive, i wouldnt do it to separate windows from games.
but if you're planning to have other tasks that are disk i/o intensive you can go for a second drive

SATA or PCIe3.0?
Basically i would say SATA,
if you dont plan to use SLI/Xfire you could go for PCIe, but it wont affect your gaming/office performance..

Best brand value for money?
samsung 850 evo

Best brand for quality?
Samsung 850 PRO or Intel 750 Series

Don't need anything above 500gb as I've got 3TB of normal hard drive storage.

Any help and suggestions would be much appreciated:)

personally i wont buy ocz drives anymore (3 of 5 of my ocz ssd died in 2 years...)
all my actual ssds are intel (diffrent models) but i want to test a samsung pro 850 or 950 in the future

Agree with rev, Samsung are currently the best option.

I bought my SSD a few years ago, and as it's small have Win 10, documents and Arma on it, with mods on HDD. It makes a huge difference to responsiveness of the OS but probably not a massive change to game experience.

Putting mods on SSD might speed up game load, but don't expect FPS increase.

Having said that, I wouldn't build a PC without one now. Win 10 handles SSD without fuss, no need to do custom tweaks.

Just be careful as if you're still using my old Asus P6b(?) board it's got an older style SATA driver interface and none of the new drives will work properly.

Ok, i would suggest a SATA3 PCIe Adapter over a PCIe Storage than.

Something like this:
https://www.newegg.com/global/uk/Produc ... -_-Product

Or you just go with sata2, the performance will still be alot better than a plain hdd.
(i mean, sata 2 supports up to 3Gb/s) if you'll reach that with one ssd iam impressed :D
the internet says: the maximum uncoded transfer rate is 2.4 Gbit/s (300 MB/s).
so you wont have the full power of the ssd, but as said still alot better than your hdds

I have a pair of Samsung 850 EVOs for my OS and games, and can heartily recommend them. Fastest and most stable SSDs I've owned yet, by some margin.

I used it on initial setup just setting the basic config, and then ignored it since. Maybe doing good stuff?

hmm i dont know that tool in specific, but normally your os (starting from win7) should detect a ssd and optimize everything for it (superfetch, trim, garbage collection, etc.)
the only thing you should check is that the os doesnt schedules defragmentation of your ssd (win + r ; dfrgui.exe).
defragmentation of ssd only reduces their lifetime and dont help in any way.

I use Magician.

You need it for the Samsung Turbo Function.  (basically used Ram to supplement the SSD like a Ram drive, but automatically and without impacting OS
