Should PWS be connecting me to the server?

Well it doesn't work anyway, it is there but it just isn't able to connect you to the server, the more annoying thing is, that if you keep the Public Server selected and try to launch a diffrent modset like the Private one, it launches both of those, now this isn't really a problem as long as they kind of use the same mods but, if they're not using the same mods then it keeps also the Public ones in and you might not be able to join the Private Server for example.

Public:   144.76.162.200, port 2362
Private:  144.76.162.200, port 2322

Connecting using Remote is definitely the best and easiest way.

On the day before the Op, refresh the Private Repo and make sure you have everything installed and up-to-date.

On Op night, get on Teamspeak by 7.15pm (unless you're leading, in which case 7pm) and you should get 10-15 minutes to try joining the server before it launches.
