Melonfish's Overclock adventure

Either of those would be perfect. However you do need to budget another £80 - £100 for a proper AIO Water Cooler for that CPU. i.e. something from Corsair or who-ever

Note that the first Skylake processors will be released soon (6xxx Series) that will superseed the 4790ks - not suggesting you get one, but it may drive the price down rapidly just before they are released as they try to clear stock

My understanding (albeit limited as I'm between purchases so do MUCH less reading) is that Broadwell is non Enthusiast only. Skylake will bring DDR-4, "K" enthusiast chips and is the next Gaming iteration... Mikk might be better informed @Mikk ?

Depends on budget mate...

Based on the last few iterations.. With no real competition out there Intel haven't exactly pushed the boat out. Expect between 0-10% Max benefit on most Benchmarks vs 4790k (IMHO! :)

Just a quick query on thermal paste. Is it a bug deal for it to be conductive? I've managed to get my hands on some my dad hoarded from work, its designed to stop contacts in circuit breakers welding together so it can handle ridiculous temps, but also massive currents and voltage.

Don't use too much thermal paste as too much is quite likely worse than non at all.

The paste is just there to fill in the microscopic gaps in the surface roughness of the CPU and cooler and can help to match the thermal impedances of the two surfaces if they are different metals.
Flatness and cleanliness of the surfaces is absolutely key. That's why some techie geeks like to lap both surfaces to a mirror shine and clean them with acetone before putting them together.

In my experience (industrial manufacture involving thermal transfer), even the best prepared surfaces and application methods do not always produce 100% reliable repeatable results, so after putting your kit together, test it carefully and thoroughly, being prepared to pull it apart and do it again if results aren't what you expect.

tldr; arctic silver, small pea size blob, mash it together, test and check temps, redo if no good

Rule of thumb is run the automatic over clocking wizard and make a note of all it's settings.

Then code those changes manually into the Bios. Test it works, then start lowering voltages. Start with Vcore obviously.

Auto tuning is good, but it tends to drive WAY too much voltage for belt and braces stability and that obviously cost you more money and heat.

Normally once stable you can then get tweaking to increase past the auto (conservative) limit. 4.5 should be very achievable. 4.7 if you're careful and 5.0 isn't unrealistic if you really know your stuffs (+silicon gods are smiling).

Always focus on CPU OC first. Get it stable and working before messing with any other overclock. (Ram XMP, should be ok - but don't push ram faster as it makes next to bugger all difference really).

Have fun

SJ

Adaptive voltage is fine. It's offset you need to worry about

Get a stable manual oc voltage sorted then configure an adaptive voltage to deliver the same max target voltage. Bear in mind adaptive will overshoot slightly by about 0.05v or so...

Plenty of good guides out there. Stupid to run your cpu at max voltage for when it could be idle, and stepped down.

Well my 16 cores step quite happily between the "max set" voltage of 1.35 and idle at 0.8 saving me a s**t load of juice... it's not necessary to leave your cup's locked at "max set" voltage.

Trust me it's fine.

None included with the cooler? That's odd
