That phrasing has me worried - do you just have a single 8-pin plugged into the card? A quick peer through my case window shows my 970 has a pair of 6-pins plugged in.

Yes it is normally two cables. Either 2 6 pins, or an 8 + a 6 pin on the 970's.

980's and above can have 2 x 8 pins....

having said that I found ref images of the Strix with only 1 connection ?

Think we need pics mate

I think in most cases the 970 does have two connectors. Mine has a 8 and 6 pin. Others are combinations of two 6's or two 8's. I would certainly be double checking that.

As for the crashes, it sounds like a possible overheat as Arma is pretty demanding. You could check your BIOS settings and see if it is set to restart on overheat. There may be an option to get it to beep as an alert at a certain temperature, ahead of just shutting down. Try that.

Alternatively, it could be the drivers. I had some issue with Nvidia drivers and my 970. I recommend you don't use any early release beta drivers with it. Stick to the full releases only.

The fans don't run all of the time on the 970. They only spin up when the card reaches a certain temperature. I initially thought there was an issue with them when I first installed mine. Turned it all on, no fans spinning.
