M.2 storage

Does anyone have any experience with m.2 SSDs? After a quick google they seem to be cheaper than the equivalent sized traditional SSD. I was wondering if there was some trade off with them?

Yes - trade off was always cost and the fact they can block PCI channels I.e. On my ROG board I cannot run an M2 and SLI and Raid. ( if I remember rightly).

Ahh sneaky, thanks for that. Just got my SLI set up so don't fancy having to turn it off

Check in the manual as you may be ok... M2 was relatively new when I got my board

M.2 runs on 2 or 4 lanes of pcie if I'm not mistaken.

Make sure you get the right type. Some are pcie and some are sata standard. They are not interchangeable.

Check your motherboard specs. Z97 is usually sata and ddr4 boards usually pcie.

I run a Samsung 128 gb on my z97-p and very happy with it. Paid £30 for it this time last year.

It's tiny. Not much bigger than a stick of wriggleys gum.

Caveat emptor. Check check and check again before buying

Having read up a little more I don't think I'll bother. The cost outweighs the benefit in my rig

That was my conclusion too. Next time maybe :-)

If your board runs the sata standard m.2 then the only real advantage is the physical size of it. If you are tight on drive bays and need lots of storage it's perfect for having one as a system drive.

They do perform slightly better than a traditional ssd. My bootup time is fast. I've no idea how fast exactly because it takes longer to type in my password than it does to actually boot.

The pcie version is a world apart in terms of speed and responsiveness. It will definitely feature in my next rig once I see what AMD is up to with Zen and/or Intels response to it.

From what I was reading the top spec pcie drives won't provide a faster boot as it requires the pcie driver to load, which is pretty far down the list in terms of boot procedure. Once you're up, 10mb/s goodness though.

They Can be configured as boot drives but I think it depends on motherboard firmware. So mileage varies and again those pcie versions hog lanes !
