Can you defrag an SSD?


the question is in the title, a bloke that sorted out my PC awhile back also defraged my my SSD wich I've always believed was a no no, can any of you wizards out there confirm for me if I can? many thanks.

Actually, yes you can.  However its unlikely to give you a noticeable performance boost, with one caveat (see below).  SSDs take the same time to access a piece of data, irrespective of where it is stored.  So there are not the perf gains that can be had from defragging a HD.   However defragmented volumes can be marginally more efficient to read data, due to the way data is buffered from the SSD coupled with the number of IOPS.

The notion that SSDs can be damaged by defrag is obsolete,  as SSD read/write counts these days are ridiculously high.  

The only time you're likely see a perf improvement if you have an SSD with an issue of persistance,  Some devices, if the data is untouched for several months will loose performance.  This can be very significant.  I've seen some reports of x10 slower.  Refreshing the data will solve this, as does a bios upgrade.  Early Samsungs had this issue.
