SITUATION:

Spurred on by their recent success in the Crimea region of Ukraine the Russian Federation have deployed troops across the Finnish border in Karelia. The Kremlin insists their actions are to protect ethnic Russians within Finland from persecution under a corrupt and failing system.

The Finnish Defense Force has withdrawn west where a fragile ceasefire is in place. Neighbouring regions throughout Finland are now under pressure as militias from both sides are fighting and straining the FDF further. Russian backed forces have growing support in the south and extensive reports of Russian troops fighting beyond the agreed ceasefire line appear to be true.

A coalition of NATO countries are supporting the FDF to combat the growing militant threat but have stopped short of sanctioning military action in support of the FDF against Russian troops in Karelia. 40 Commando have been deployed to the region to support the FDF and prevent further Russian troop activity supporting the militias and are active behind enemy lines.

Vasili Davidov is the leader of the FKA (Free Karelia Army) and his close ties to Russia are believed to be crucial to their alliance. This morning he was confirmed to be visiting a town the FKA recently seized from Finnish forces. At 17:40 he boarded a Russian KA-60 helicopter heading west but this was hit by a Finnish MANPAD and crashed deep in FKA territory. Charlie Company, 40 Commando are the closest force to the suspected crash site. Now, just over an hour since the helicopter went down, Charlie Company is at FRV Romeo, ready to search the area to either confirm Davidov is dead or detain and extract him.

• A mixture of trained regulars and untrained militia using Russian and soviet equipment.
• Motorised and limited mechanised capability. The exact disposition of enemy forces is unknown.
• Enemy intent is assumed to be to locate downed helicopter.
• Morale expected to be varying.
