Recommendation needed - Recording Software

Hi all,

I know there are quite a few folks here which record (apologies in advance if this topic has been discussed to death) - however any input on stable recording software for A3? I'm assuming Fraps, however I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks guys - running with an AMD - I'll give OBS a crack then.

I use FRAPS:
  • simple to use
  • splits long recordings into handy smaller files for easier editing
  • very good quality, better than most others I've seen, but does result in large raw file sizes
  • small effect on FPS (for me 1-2 frames out of 30)
  • records audio, game + mic if required

I've used OBS too when I've needed to record across multiple Windows, as it captures what's on screen, whereas FRAPS captures a specific running process.

All recording software will take up CPU time and therefore knock frames somewhat. If your system struggles to run ArmA in the first place it will be more noticeable. I expect hard drive speed has an impact on system performance too while recording.

i5-2500K @3.30GHz, AMD HD5850 1GB, 8Gb DDR3, Seagate 3Gb 7200rpm (recording) + Crucial M4 SSD (Win7+ArmA)

Great - I'll give the free version of fraps a go to get a feel for the two. See which works best on my system :)

+1 for shadowplay, the record after the action feature does kill the FPS a bit but recording whilst playing seems perfect to me.

I hope you don't mind me hijacking a little but what do people use to edit their videos. I've been using windows movie maker but it just feels clumsy.

Corel Video Studio Pro X3

why? because it was far cheaper than some of the other software mentioned (no piracy for me!), handles .mov 1080p from my camera and is quite advanced yet still noob friendly.

I've always thought of AE more for compositing and effects (as you said Howl) but not necessarily for editing (as in cutting, splicing and arranging - pretty much 90% of what's involved in producing an Arma video). It's possible to use AE for this purpose, but I'm not sure how friendly it would be towards your average Youtuber. AE wasn't really designed to be an editor.

For editing I would definitely recommend Sony Vegas Pro (also what I started with) as well as Adobe Premiere. Both are very easy to use although I've found Vegas has the edge in usability but it really comes down to personal preference.

But I think Arka just wanted editing (I think?) so I stand by Premiere, mostly in this case as if you wanted to expand with AE, photoshop, Audition etc it all links very well.
