Flares

This weeks mid-week op, for those that missed it was in a jungle, at night, in the rain, without NVGs.  The whole experience demonstrated how poor the vanilla UGL launched flares illuminate.

They last under 30s and don't really illuminate the scene.  See below

Image

You get the picture ....

The next release of the BAF weapons will include a little more illuminating flares

These now last for 90s (according to 1972 M203 manual) and are a somewhat brighter

If anyone has ever used UGL flares in RL, I'd be interested in getting some feedback on brightness, range, etc.

I don't have first hand experience - but they are VERY bright.... Magnesium burning bright... i.e. they will illuminate a considerable distance to a fair brightness

yeah .. thats about right ....

i used a P2A1... and it was s**t

... also the UGL Stuff is bad ... its just to small and dosnt stay long enought in the air ...

keep in mind thats all 'small stuff' the fun starts at 80mm++ thats big enought for it and thats allready mortar / launcher  ...

the good old Carl Gustav is also capable of shooting that caliber and is also used for illumination .... i've seen it in an exercice and it gets high enought and stood in the air for ~10min ... the spects claims it can get upto 2km high

but that bullet is 3kg =) so alot bigger then what you get in a UGL / Signal Pistol ...

so think of the UGL / Pistol stuff not as illumination its more to signaling ... the illumination is neglegtable and if you want some light ask someone with a bigger barrel =)

thats where a mortar / artillery team comes into place ,,, but there days where NVG's are common everyone has one and you dont need illumination =)

cheers moeses

The L12A2 'Schermuly Flare' is still in service. Tend to be at base or for specific tasks rather than a patrol item,

UGL flares are ok, the best ones we get illum wise is 81mm Mortars, 60mm,  or schemuleys.  Last night attack I was on we used around 60 for one Pl in the space of around 30 mins although that was live and no HMNVS.

All useful info thx.

We'll update the 81mm rounds at the same time as the UGL
