It appears both server and client need to run it for optimum performance. However, we only tried out the server performance binary because of the issues we were having with Panthera - now solved by removing:
1) @Alive - was causing the desync
2) @VcomAI - was giving stupid AI behaviour including the enemy not shooting at us
So in conclusion, no don't alter your set-up. We'll be running the STABLE version on the server tomorrow without memory allocator and clients should continue to run the standard STABLE build too.
