I haven't. Took us several days to push into Berezino.

The reason for the intel, is that it gives you the opportunity to send a small column of vehicles further south, or even a helo drop to the south, hence the Chinook.

Disclaimer: All events took place on the winter version of the map

We had encounter multiple lock-ons from out to sea. We went off to investigate and discovered two contacts in the HUD. Upon further inspection these contacts turned out to be an active radar that was locking us but completely invisible to visible and IR cameras. I was told in discussion before the public action today that these assets were intentionally placed to provide the AI a method to counter our air assets. These sites in the ocean appear to be able to lock you anywhere on the eastern coast including at our own base. I feel it is most unfair that the AI are given a method to shoot down air assets with no possible way to be countered.

I am not saying that there should be no counter at all for our air assets far from it but I feel it could be handled more like artillery is. Physical positions that are able to be found and destroyed. We already have AAA that provides a threat to air assets, why not expand that to include SAMs instead of relying on using the current invisible OSOD SAM and spawn these with more frequency. Also, the mission briefing says "They are now reinforcing their troops and are establishing an air defence system" this in incongruent to what we experience in game: a fully fledged air defence net capable of taking out most aircraft. Furthermore, the lock-ons from out in the sea make even less sense once you consider the fact that these are supposed to be Russian airborne forces. If you want lock-ons to come from out to sea, do that but make it part of the narrative of the mission. Perhaps a Russian destroyer has now moved to support ground assets. Make it a mission to take it out akin to the task to capture the island of Moray on Operation Rhamnousia.

It would improve immersion for all, allow for better decisions to be made to less informed commanders and allow those in pilot slots to have a more enjoyable experience if we were able to fight back against the SAMs. The method that this outcome is achieved by is less important than it being achieved.

Data,

I'm sure the public team will clarify, however, I'll mention a few principles below.

  • Marked By (Yellow Circle): In ArmA, marked by does not represent locking, however, the AA piece painting you ready for a lock. It cannot lock as it does not meet its 'lock' parameters (i.e. Min locking height, obstacles in the way, reloading). You may experience being 'Marked By' even when low.

  • OSOD SAMs: SAMs have different generation types. Each generation has different values for locking time and engagement altitudes, however, I will not post those specific figures. For the ones currently on the mission, you have to be at an altitude in the magnitude of three figures (meters), and the locking time is in excess of 10 seconds. Helicopter pilots have no need to be in excess of a 100m, especially when there is a known air threat, both from MANPADS/SAMS/AAA. The only exception for this is fixed-wing. However, as in real life, they fly low to avoid detection and only gain altitude (when required) for attack runs in short time periods. If you're flying high enough to be shot at by SAMs, the question really is, why are you flying that high?

  • Realism: In real life, the ground-based AA picture is beyond what ArmA can simulate in terms of AO size, thus, the reason, AFAIK, they are placed off map. The only effective way to engage SAM threats, IRL, is via direct munitions (i.e. Anti-Radiation Missiles), which is again, beyond the scope of ArmA. The reality is, it is hard to engage SAMs IRL, thus, most aircraft fly Nap of the Earth to avoid detection and only pop out of these parameters when essential.

If we didn't have SAMs, you could fly at a high altitude, out of the engagement range of AAA and MANPAD, to the point it would make the ground-based AA threat redundant. The SAMs are there to present a significant risk to flying an airframe. This means you cannot just fly it around and spot every enemy in the AO from high altitudes, thus, your idea of having it as a mission (to destroy) is a bad idea IMO. The SAMs are fully avoidable if you know what you are doing. This also balances the game for all, IMO (i.e. an Apache won't be able to spot everything from 500m, with no AA threat, and ruin the awareness picture for ground units). You might as well be playing COD with UAVs if you don't have SAMs.

As the mission briefing says, "They are now reinforcing their troops and are establishing an air defence system" since their AA system is still a work in progress it would make sense for it to have weaknesses. If you absolutely must have a threat to air assets at high altitude then why not go for aircraft doing CAP? They can be shot down allowed for the option fight back against the AA threat plus, different aircraft types could provide variation similar to different SAM generations. I know the size for air to air combat is probably also in excess of the size of the AO however, you are less likely to notice lack of terrain when trying to fight something in the air than on the terrain itself. It would also allow the weapons systems we have already (IR & Radar guided AA missiles) to engage the AA threat rather than needing to rely on ARMs with limited functionality.

@Datahood, the SAM systems you are talking about have deliberately placed off-map and invulnerable to players.

They are intended to add a more realistic approach to air combat over the AO, within the limitations imposed by Arma.  In reality, those area systems would be positioned 30-100km behind the lines and off-limits to you as a CAS pilot.  They would be surrounded by their own point defence systems.  Other aircraft outside the scope of the mission would be tasked with suppressing them, just as the enemy forces would be tasked with defending them.  None of that is possible with Arma, due to the scale of the map and the limitations of the Arma engine e.g. max range of any SAM system is less than 16km.  16km is not area defence range, it is just beyond point defence.  If you want to play SAM suppression, go play DCS, which fully supports it.

The reason why they have been included in some of our missions is to force CAS to adopt a more realistic ceiling.  IIRC those particular systems are gen 1 (SA-6) and gen 2 (SA-11), which are designed to impose a cap on 500m and 200m respectively.  They also have realistic lock times of 22 and 15s respectively.  These are the training versions, in some mission on the private Ops we use SA-14, to keep you below 100m.

I'm not sure what you were flying, but remember that you should be Nap of Earth in a combat setting against conventional forces with SAM capability, For a helo, that's skids brushing the grass and treetops.

Oh we don't use CAP, because Arma does not model air to air combat

It doesn't just apply to this mission but all with an arsenal that include the L111A1 and L134A1 weapons. It'd be great if we could access the ammo for these from the arsenal. We already have the weapons so it seems a little odd we can't get any ammo for them since we already have access to 800 rnd 7.62 belts for the Warrior's Co-ax.

Go to the Logistics Point, and you can load extra L7/L111/L134 belts. Just the same as you can for the Milan, and the Warrior's RARDEN and coax.

I know about that but it'd be nice to be able to grab them from the arsenal too.
