My main issue with the entrenching tool is that what it creates looks absolutely abhorrent.

It may not be as elegant as a woodcutters axe, but it's certainly efficient and gets the job done right. 

Edit: I should mention, if you're preparing a position for a defensive against an enemy attack, it's more than OK to blow up some trees to make yourself an arch of fire. As long as the enemy isn't roughly half a kilometre away and you plan on staying concealed up until close contact.
