To be fair, this can be a nightmare. Some people gladly expect that a german infantry group (which is usually 8-12 players) to walk into enemy fire as long as the move in a neat formation.
Getting in formation like that for briefings etc. is not that hard to actually get it done. There is a pretty easy and fast procedure to do it.

1-0 is moving to position in which is enough space and he will face a fitting direction.
The SL's will move in front of him and leave enough space for a player to walk through the gaps
Section members just line up behind their SL's in the numbering order and
Everybody is facing the direction of 1-0
The unit from which I learned made a slight variant in which the FTL would always be on the rear of a line but I don't think thats really important.
