Bluemaxx, didn't Lockheed recently announce a net-energy-producing fusion reactor? That could be interesting.
Yep two years ago, the 'high beta fusion reactor' from the Skunk Works division of Lockheed Martin. The idea is to have a compact fusion reactor, the current experimental ones like JET and ITER are massive, which is about the size of a trailer from a lorry and outputs 100MW net. The project timeline was 5 years for a prototype and working model for sale in 10 years.
There's an old saying/joke about fusion power in science and engineering circles: "Fusion is about thirty years away..............and always will be."
I won't be holding my breath over the project, but I always welcome technical advancements, you never know what sort of knowledge nugget you'll get out of a project and where it will lead now or in the future even if the original project was a failure.
Fusion or fission, getting reliable energy production without the emissions that everyone can use without relying in imports from the s**t holes of the world is crucial for every nations security and prosperity. I'm an engineer so I'll always advocate development and technical solutions favouring the best tool in the box, for me at the current time nuclear power (despite all its short comings) is that tool. I've probably got a bias due to academic exposure so don't necessarily take my word, make up your own minds.
