Not much of an image, but 76 years ago tomorrow (11th of November 1940), a small group of Swordfish Naval bombers - old obsolete Bi-Planes - effectively knocked the Regia Marina (Italian Navy) out of the war by raiding their heavily defended naval base in Taranto. The success of the raid - for very little Allied loss - is said to have been the inspiration for the later attack on Pearl Harbour. The old navy bombers were also responsible for damaging the rudder on the Bismarck which directly lead to her eventual sinking, and by the end of the war, the Swordfish held the distinction of having caused the destruction of a greater tonnage of Axis shipping than any other Allied Aircraft. Not a bad return for some metal frame and fabric planes.

Grandad flew those with the Fleet Air Arm, and some of the stories he tells are fantastic - he doesn't talk about the war, but he talks about the people, the antics, and the ridiculous happenings

I think this image from the troubles is one of the most powerful that I have ever seen.  Taken about a mile from my house and a long time ago.
