Favourite Films

I remember a looong time ago we used to have a favourite films thread, so I thought I'd bring it back. Post some of your favourite films.

I'll start. For me it would probably be (in no particular order):
- The Guest
- Saving Private Ryan
- Black Hawk Down
- Shawshank Redemption
- Inception
- Shutter Island
- The Lion King (admit it, you like it too)
- Terminator 2: Judgement Day
- The Book of Eli
- Man of Steel

There's so many more I could name, but can't think of right now. I'll leave it at 10 for now.

Edit 17/11/14:
- Gravity
- I Am Legend

Edit 24/04/15
- Interstellar

I'm mostly huge sucker for Dystopia- Movies so:
- V for Vendeta (all time fav. It's like a reflection of present time)
- Dark City (aesthetically pleassing)
- Srrogates (Bad movie, huge meaning)

Something exotic & wierd: (aka movies that are hard to wacth)
- Rocky Horror The Picture Show
- Begotten (DANGER! This will mes up your mind)

Some must see- documents:
- Trinity And Beyond - The Atomic Bomb Movie
- Food INC
- Breaking The Taboo

Some "casual" movies worth of mention: (aka movies that are pure entertament for me)
- Silent Hill
- Boomdock Saints
- Hannibal Lecter- movies (incredible character)

I like to get into metaphysics of the movie and seek the meaning of the story.
A quote from V for vendeta: " Artists use lies to tell the truth"

Interstellar was great, apart from the end where it became ridiculous. For a film that claims to be highly scientifically accurate, there must have been a better way of ending it.

I agree the ending may appear a little far-fetched, but have you ever read any articles/watched any videos on quantum physics? Not even today's top scientists can explain quantum phenomena - it's almost supernatural

You may have heard of Flatland (a concept that gives you an idea of how a 3D world is inconceivable to those in a 2D world, similarly - how a 4D+ world is inconceivable to those in a 3D world):

This relates to the film in that time for us appears constant (we can't control it) - whereas for those existing in a 4D world, time may just be another dimension that can be traveled in any direction (and for us to see this, it needs to be shown in a way that we can understand - in 3D, aka - the bookshelf).

Everything after this point doesn't relate directly to the film, but it might make you see how the ending of Interstellar doesn't seem all that far-fetched in comparison to what we've already discovered.

There's the Double Slit Experiment (electrons change their behavior depending on whether they're being consciously observed):

Gives you an idea of just how spooky quantum physics is - electrons are literally (and drastically) changing their behavior depending on whether they're being watched. This is a real experiment.
I don't know about you, but this freaks me out.

Some scientists say that our reality only exists when we're observing it. When not being observed, everything is in quantum superposition - a state where, just like the experiment, everything behaves differently:

With the Double Slit Experiment and Schrodinger's Cat in mind, the answer to the question "If a tree falls in a forest, and nobody is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" might actually be - no.

Quantum Entanglement (start at 3:03) - again, this is real. Dubbed "Spooky action at a distance" by Einstein.

Sorry for the boring/extremely nerdy post - but after even trying to understand any of this myself, it makes Interstellar look timid.

Well the most basic "facts" about Interstellar were correct. But dont forget that it is all theory and not proven at all.

In other news, a film everyone should watch is Night will Fall which is a documentary about the holocaust by Alfred Hitchcock. Most of the material was missing and thought but it was found again and in 2014 it was restored and cut into a film. Considering the material it is a extremy disturbing film. I would not recommend younger people under the age of 18 to watch it alone, in fact I would not recommending anyone to watch this film alone.

You mean Interstellar? Yes the ending is entirely theoretical, but the point was that it doesn't appear all the far-fetched in comparison to real results from real experiments.

Anyway, I'll try not to turn this thread into a physics debate :P

Thanks for the vid on Night Will Fall - I've heard about it before but never watched it.

Not a film, but have you seen the recently restored footage of Berlin in 1945 (and how it looked just after WW2)?
