I donno about that Deejay - quite a few books where the film adaptation is equally (if not more so) enjoyable :). Trainspotting, The Shining, Clockwork Orange, Goodfellas, Silence of the Lambs, The Shawshank Redemption, Blade Runner, No Country for Old Men, Fight Club,  (to name a few) which I have loved as much as the books.

I'm sure there are a lot more, which aren't coming to mind. Ultimatly it comes down to the producer - usually the more money they're investing, the less likely it'll stay true to the story. Ridley Scott carries enough weight for me to stay excited :) - if it were a lesser known director, I'd probably share your concern.

Not to forget all the books that will maybe never get a film adaption. However sometimes I think it would probably for the better.

There is no war to end all wars.

Homo-eroticism aside my favorite film is Top Gun, it is some of the best dog fighting ever put to film.

But to add to the list
The Boondock Saints 1&2
Black Hawk Down (The book is well worth a read also)
I'm a pretty huge James Bond fan
Then all the cheesy 80's/90's stuff like
Under Siege 1&2
Commando
Terminator 2 (the best one)
Tango & Cash
Rambo 3 (again the best one)

Murphy's Law of Combat Operations # 8: If at first you don't succeed... call in an airstrike.

Any good suggestions for war/military genre films or TV series?

Lot of good suggestions already - thought I'd add a few into the mix:

TV
Vietnam: Tour of Duty was enjoyable too (probably more sentimental enjoyment as it's pretty dated to the late 80's).

Film
Russia/Afghanistan: The Beast of War
WW2: The Army of Shadows
Vietnam: The Odd Angry Shot
Vietnam: Oliver stones Vietnam "trilogy" is also great. Platoon, Born on the Forth of JulyHeaven and Earth (watch in that order).

Note: A lot of these are fairly old - so do keep that in mind :P

Also, if you dig the Samurai genre and feudal Japan - see below:
13 Assasins - very underrated, though a brilliant flick. Great clip below :D

When the Last Sword is Drawn is also a good Japanese Samurai movie.
Yes and Yes to both of these, 13 assassins is funny whilst being a brilliant story, when the last sword is drawn was great, the main character comes across as a money grubber but it's actually about honour, thoroughly enjoyed that. I'd also recommend The Twilight samurai, Hiroyuki Sanada in one of his best roles imo I loved this film.

Indeed - both fantastic. I've slowly been introducing the genre to the misses (skeptical as hell)... slow going, but she seems to be digging them so far. I've started with more recent flicks and am slowly moving back as to not spook her - end goal is Rashomon :D.

Next project is to get her into (tolerate) spaghetti westerns.

Saw Sicario with the misses over the weekend. Great flick - well worth a watch in the cinema. Strong female character too which kept the misses entertained throughout all the shooty bits. Check it out.

Too soon to be a "favourite film", but I just saw The Martian and loved it :D It's got a nice balance between scientific realism, with a few concessions to cinematic requirements or public understanding. I can highly recommend anyone watch it!
