I used to surf every weather; rain, snow, howling gales. Most memorable was a moonlit night in mist at Saunton. Surreal, but bliss!
Sadly age, responsibility and the cost of getting to the beach restricts me to fair weather weekends now, so not as often as I'd like.
Oh yeah, this will put you off - I'm on a waveski. ;-)
I find the hassle from aggro 'locals' at Croyde not worth the effort, but Puts is pretty nice on a 1/2 incoming tide, with shelter from the wind, and like you say, great atmosphere.
I've surfed Towan/GW and of course Fistral too in the past, but got to say I preferred Newquay back in the 80's when it was a much quieter place before it became party capital of England! Still I envy you being that close to the beach.
