Reading a seriously qualified USAF pilot (F5, F16, F15, who also trained German pilots on East German Mig-29's for several years - so he knows what he's talking about)

Reckons the slow speed cobra maneuvers are not worth their salt as if the jets are seriously THAT close to risk a slow down so significant to pull them off -would leaves you totally open for a gun strafe unless it works 100% first time.. And his opinion is that they would just NEVER get that close and be slow enough without getting a missile up the chuff first.

He says the ability to snap missiles off at ridiculous angles i.e. well outside cone of US lock on was very effective - but this would normally be relevant when NOT using missiles on the attacking craft first. I.e. assuming the Mig29 hasn't seen you and going for a gun run. You might be surprised how well it can defend itself.

F16<Mig-29<F-15A/B   with the later F15C being on about par with the Mig29... That's pure handling - not warfare, as he said that much of the high tech stuff just didn't work on the Soviet kit.
