Advice on a new monitor

This is the monitor I use - its one up from the one RDogg posted (doesn't use PWM backlighting and uses the more advanced AH-IPS panel):
Asus PB278QR 27-inch IPS Monitor

See my post about it here, and other recommendations:

Acer XB270HU - - a new 1440p, 144hz Gsync IPS monitor.

Apparently it's insane (IPS + high refresh + gsnyc) but there are few reviews out and they're only starting to become available now.

I was looking for the same thing, then a ROG Swift monitor came up cheap locally on gumtree so I went for it, had it a week now and I am very pleased, Gaming at 1440 with 144 scan is beautiful to behold, I am using an i7-4790k o/c to 4.6 with a GTX970 and 8gb Ram.

It replaces a *cheapo* 1080 IPS panel, and I cannot notice any degradation in colour, but then I am not really looking that hard!

Frame rates have taken a knock compared to 1080, but the addition of G-Sync means that the drop is hardly noticeable, here is a clip from Sundays op with FPS Counter to give you an idea, everything is on ultra settings with 8XAA

On a similar note, I was thinking of just buying a Standard tv? Something that I could have both my consoles and pc connected into, are there any negative points to doing this?

I have my PC hooked up to this

http://www.whathifi.com/panasonic/tx-p50gt50/review (its an oldy but a goody)

along with various consoles etc. The only thing would be the lack of HDMI inputs, I have pretty much everything running through a dedicated AV amp so its not so much of a concern for me.

It works great though, especially with a 360 controller dongle and steam big screen mode, although I still havnt found a satisfactory wireless keyboard/mouse for Sofa play.

There is a difference, Im sure a tech bod will explain but the picture on my TV is nowhere near as clear as the monitor, having said that from couch distance its perfectly ok

A big difference between a monitor and HDTV is response time (aka input lag): the amount of time it takes for a pixel to change. The higher (slower) the response time, the more 'behind' you are with the real image.

Generally, TVs have a higher (slower) response time than monitors. This gives the feeling of input lag since there's a delay between your input (e.g. clicking your mouse to fire) and the TV showing the resultant image.

Whether or not this a problem for you is another thing, but I thought I'd mention it ;)

Also, and this is just an assumption, TVs probably aren't as easy-on-the-eyes/as sharp as monitors when it comes to displaying text. TVs are made for showing mostly movies/tv shows, where small text is probably never displayed. On the other hand, monitors are made primarily for desktop use (where text is everywhere) and so are probably going to display much sharper text.
