UK General Election results, Dismay or Joy?

I really dont  know a lot about the politics in the UK, so I only really have a view on it what it could mean for the EU.

As far as I understand it Cameron has won the election but his position in the government is weaker as before. He has to deal with a lot of new people who are pretty much anti european union. If I recall it correctly, he already announced a referendum about leaving or staying in the EU in 2017. Since his own position is weaker as before, this might actually happen earlier. I dont think he can afford leaving this important issue uncleared for two more years.

As at midday, some votes are still to be counted, but it looks as though the Conservatives will gain a majority and will be able to govern without a coalition, putting them in a stronger position than pre-election.

All three leaders of the opposition parties (Milliband, Clegg and Farage) have resigned.

To be fair, I am a bit shocked people actually vote a airhead like Cameron, but I am also schocked how much people here vote Angela Merkel.

Let's remember when posting in this thread, that some will support one side, and some the other.
Therefore, try not to insult when passing comment.  "I can't believe anyone voted for X party, they must be brain dead idiots!".
Getting some moderation in early before the masses arrive.  ;-)

Neither dismayed or overjoyed. Probably relieved. I figured the Conservatives would be the largest party - rightly or wrongly - simply because the alternative was worse. A weak Labour leader backed up by a party whose sole purpose is to destroy the Union was a terrible prospect, both politically and economically. The result also means we will get a say - regardless of your point of view - on our membership of the EU, which was promised by all parties at the last election but not delivered. Personally, I am disappointed Farage didn't get into the House of Commons, purely because he would be far more interesting based on his speeches in the European Parliament. I also feel a little bit of sympathy for Clegg. I honestly believe he did the right thing five years ago, which - as was predicted at the time - meant he was going to sacrifice his party in the interest of providing stable government for the nation at a time where it really needed it. Boy was that true!. I am however delighted that Ed Balls got the boot. Labour should have done that five years ago!

I'm a bit depressed by the SNP sweeping nearly everything in Scotland, I feel a total stranger in my own country now. The Labour party really needs to sort itself out and get re-engaged with the working people it has forgotten about over the last decade or so.

Constitutional issues need to be resolved or the Union won't survive the next assault. A proper federal system is necessary, regional devolved parliaments/assemblies governing over several million people, a national lower house for issues like defence and foreign policy based on population and an elected upper house where each devolved region sends the same number of MPs. Everything is done by proportional representation. Carrying on with this largely 18th century system isn't going to cut it any more.

So I didn't vote due to work and not having internet at home this not being able to vote by proxy. But if I did it would have been conservative.

What I love about this group tho is that we can have this conversation and it not end in a full blown argument.

In my opinion the Tories are the best party for the country but only time will tell. I just hope we don't have riots because of some stupid people who think that their way is the only way.

Quite happy with the way it went as i was mostly focused on local results more than anything else and i was hoping for the SNP to sweep about 30 seats but i am disappointed with the fact England is sweeping closer and closer to only having what is basically a two party system. That would bode poorly for the political future.

Yet Scotland is almost a single party state in the general election? That can't be healthy either.
