Turkish F-16's shoot down Russian Su-24

Quote:
Turkish fighter jets have shotdown a Russian warplane near the Syrian border, with conflicting claims over whether the downed aircraft violated Turkish airspace.

Turkey's military said two Turkish F-16s were involved in shooting down the plane, after issuing 10 warnings in five minutes. But Russia's defence ministry said it could prove that the plane, a Sukhoi Su-24, was over Syrian air space for the duration of its flight.

Footage from private broadcaster Haberturk TV showed a warplane going down in flames in a woodland area, a long plume of smoke trailing behind it.

The plane went down in area known by Turks as Turkmen Mountain, in northern Syria near the Turkish border, Haberturk said. Separate footage from Turkey's Anadolu Agency showed two crew members parachuting out of the jet before it crashed.

Al Jazeera reported that the plane came down in the village of Yamadi in Syria's Latakia governorate. Russian military helicopters were searching for the pilots from the warplane, Turkey's Dogan news agency said. One of the crew was in the hands of Turkmen forces in Syria, who were searching for the other pilot, broadcaster CNN Turk reported, citing local sources. Turkish president Tayyip Erdogan has been briefed by the head of the military, while prime minister Ahmet Davutoglu has ordered consultations with NATO, the United Nations and related countries, their respective offices said.

A Syrian military source said the incident was being investigated. Russia has repeatedly carried out air strikes in Syria in defence of president Bashar al-Assad, who is fighting a multi-faceted insurgency involving Islamic State and other groups.

Turkey, a member of NATO, called this week for aUN Security Council meeting to discuss attacks on Turkmens in neighbouring Syria, and last week Ankara summoned the Russian ambassador to protest the
bombing of their villages. Ankara has traditionally expressed solidarity with Syrian Turkmens, who are Syrians of Turkish descent.

Well then. I guess it was going to happen at some point with the amount of aircraft over Syria. Will be interesting to see how this develops.

Everyone involved will hopefully take a step back and think about it before it escalates

Indeed - at least both pilots bailed over Turkey. I'd hate to imagine what the Russian reaction would be if they were captured and subsequently executed by IS.

Guess that is what they'll state.

Though I have a Russian colleague who is adamant that this is Turkey's response to Russia targeting IS controlled refineries and oil storage (which is primarily sold to Turkey).

Ok, this is when i should have posted the fan gif...

now the question is whether the plane was in fact over turkish airspace, TBH even if the russian plane was you wouldn't shoot it down unless it was actively being a threat, what turkey are trying to achieve here is literally anyone's guess.

If my previous experience of turkey is anything to go off probably several local ads for:

Yeah. Apparently they landed in rebel held areas who have been targeted by Russian airstrikes

I guess they're better off getting instantly killed while trying to run...as opposed to being captured, imprisoned and tortured for a few months, only to be beheaded/burnt alive online ... :(

Until now Turkey had freely fly over syria and bombing mainly government forces and kurds. Basically everyone who would put in danger flow of oil from syria and north Iraq. They have been doing this with no international legal consequences.
Russia was flying syrian air space on invite of syrian government witch is still only international admitted rule in syria.
I cant find any opposition group in syria that is internationally accepted as opposition to government, they cant even get any of them to peace talks...
There was G-20 meeting in Turkey not long ago where all 20 nations agreed on rules of engagement to make sure those things doesn't happen. Look like someone forget of that.

Things are very complicated atm. Any quick reactions would be clear mistake from any side. Things need to calm down and be solved political. If not we can expect all out war NATO-russia, iran... and we can expect free x-ray for whole world at some point.

only my 2 dinars.

Looks like this is becoming a right mess.

I don't think Russia will act against turkey directly, being a NATO member and all, but I'm half expecting Russian involvement on the ground to step up after this. Plus they will probably take a much harder stance with any turkish jets near assads forces

Supposedly the Turks repeatedly hailed the Su-24 that they'd violate Turkish airspace if they continued to go along their course and will be shot down in the process.

Flight path of the Russ jet, apparently. According to the Turks. If true, the jet would've been inside for a dozen seconds or more. It's more than likely this is the case, since Russia likes to do this a lot. The whole "hailed for five minutes" thing is a massive over-exaggeration on Turkeys part to make them seem in the right. Basic Math. Looks like both sides are in the wrong.

Bound to happen sooner or later, considering how often Russian military aircraft fly over foreign airspace. Still too early to come up with proper assumptions.
