Don't forget to get the mods we use on the public server, there are quite a few: 
3CB Public Server setup guide

I too have been playing BIS since the Operation Flashpoint days (14,400 dial up modem online play!), and ended up at 3CB.  The Public Operations are a great way to get a feel of what we do.
