Graphics card

So i want to buy a new monitor with a res of 1920x1080 24inch led ips. Currently have a 1600x900 monitor. I have a zotac gtx 680 2gb will this struggle with games on high settings? If so will a gtx 970 asus strix 4gb fix this?

Not to tech savvy

I used a GTX970 on a 1920x1200, and I'm very happy with the way most things run. Remember though, Arma is a complete pig and will run poopily if you want to have both usable view distances AND objects/textures/terrain/shadows that don't look like a bag of skittles. If you want to discuss specifics feel free to poke me here or TS, as I've built a number of computers over the years :)

Remember ARMA is totally CPU bound at anything less than 2k Resolution. So 1080p will run perfectly fine on the card you already have... 98% sure of that, short of seeing the rest of your specs.

Trick to good frames is try to keep object view distance as low as you can tolerate within the game... I.e. ranges of engagement for us don't normally exceed 600-700m MAX so we spawn our Ai in at 800m (you all know we don't encourage Snipers anyway, so what's the point of anything further ?)

So realistically an object view distance of more than 900-1000 is a luxury. I run at 1000 - 1200 Object view depending on the map with a 1500-2500 total view distance - again depending on the map.

Remember this is best tested on a real MP server as in single player and map dependant I can get 100FPS + on some older maps with 12000/12000 - just with NOTHING else on it. i.e. not a real mission.

In summary - get the monitor, if it's not quite running fast enough a 970 would be a great upgrade - but not essential.

For reference, with the 970 (ASUS STRIX) I play at 2560x1440 and get excellent frames in pretty much every game (on Very High/Ultra).

In GTA V I run everything on Very High and get near constant 60 FPS:

At 1080p you'll get glorious frames in almost everything.

The 970 series are very power efficient so if you're current setup runs the 680 then I'd expect it to be able to run the 970 as well (although don't quote me on that). I'm on a 850w PSU but I probably never get anywhere near 100% usage.

Edit: Just checked Nvidia's website - the 970's minimum system power requirement (500w) is 50w less than the 680.

Try and get a 4790 - it's got a bit more overhead if you're happy to overclock (even without OC'ing it's slightly faster)

Hey Goodson, question. What CPU do you have? I get around 20 fps on sunday missions with low settings, so I'm thinking about upgrading to an i7 4770.

I've got the i7 4790k @ 4GHz (stock clock). Keep in mind that I only get about 35fps on ops (depending on number of AI) since Arma is quite poorly optimised in multiplayer, so don't expect 60 fps ;)
