New rig CPU/ GPU advice please

The CPU will have no problems with games like that.

If possible can you stretch to a 4690k? It'll be a lot more future proof with overclocking.

In terms of cooling, I run an Arctic Freezer 13 on my 4690k overclocked @4.4ghz and it barely nudges 60 Celsius, quiet too. And comes in at just over £20

You wont need water cooling for it, it'll be a waste of money.

I can't say much about the 960 from first hand experience but it ticks the right boxes on the benchmarks.

No where did he mention water cooled. :-)

Yes, Madshepherd for play of older games that rig is perfect (probably slightly overkill)

It's unlikely she will want to OC so the stock Retail fan will be fine - just get the "intel Boxed version"

Hello,

I am planning to do some slight upgrades. I like my job, but I don't exactly earn a lot of money in it. Since this monday, I work more hours and so I should be able to do some slight upgrades in the course of two months. I am planning to upgrade my CPU first and after that probably my GPU. I am not really up to date with hardware these days, so I can use some good suggestions. While I definitely would appreciate more frames in ArmA 3, it should also perform better in the majority of other games.

Right now my potato pc is as followed

Mainboard: Gigabyte H67MA-UD2H-B3 (Intel Socket 1155)
CPU: Intel i5-2400 @3.10 GHz - 3.30 GHz
GPU: ASUS R9 R280 Series
RAM: 8GB
OS: Windows 10 (With anniversary) Update

I can spend 150€ every month and the biggest question is the CPU. Is it right now better to switch to AMD? If yes it would mean I also would need to invest in a new mainboard.

When it comes to the GPU I am currently looking at the Radeon RX 460 or a Geforce GTX 750 Ti.

There is no war to end all wars.

I'd make the ram upgrade your first move.

If you want frames in Arma you need a monster CPU. I upgraded my GPU to a 970 and the difference was marginal, upgraded the CPU and it got me up to about 40 frames (on a good night!). If I was to suggest a CPU it would be intel, more specifically whatever CPU Serjames is running! I can't imagine it being cheap tho.

I watched one of your uploaded streams the other night SJ and I've never seen someone sustain that a high a frame rate in Arma! Mine usually starts to drops off after like a half hour or so.

Yeah, I got a GTX 960 and had sort of 20fps standard, then a short while after upgraded my cpu to a i5 6600k and thats when I noticed a massive frame rate increase, now comfortably sit above 30-40, and thats with me pushing the view distance a little etc, I could probably happily get more out of it.

TL;DR - Mefirst I would recommend if you can spend 150 a month, wait a few months and save around 3-400 then grab a nice solid i5, a 1060 & some ram or something.

Ahh good bloody point Robbie. MeFirst. You will defo benefit from more cores. Even with Nvidia shadow play.

In terms of video editing more RAM does help, but if you really want a significant improvement, you would need a lot (lot, lot, lot) RAM. In the end it doesn't matter too much if It takes one hour or two hours when I am rendering videos. I render videos when I am not at home/not on the pc. Recording (at least with most tools that are not shadowplay) are depending on the CPU and not so much about RAM. Streaming is already fine, the only issue is I cant stream most operations in 1080p because of lag it would cause in ArmA when we run large scale missions. RAM is also pretty expensive here right now and so it is pretty much at the bottom of my list.
