OPERATION BRIEFING / ROLE SELECT


G'day Jefro, 

Just recently we've abandoned the 'role selection' (bar priority/OP crucial roles being chosen a week in advance - Hotel, SL's, Pilots, etc) method which we had typically done in the past. (See reasoning/discussion on this topic here). I believe one of the key factors for this was to speed the initial role selection process along on the night. Additionally to a degree, it allows/forces folks to mix it up a little and try something generally outside of their comfort zones, whether it be the group they play with, or the role they prefer - which isn't necessarily a negative. 

As for planning - as it stands, Hotel and Section leads will join the server at 7pm and have 20 minutes of planning in their own TS channel. Once planning has been completed, channels are merged with the rest of the members - where we are briefed by our respective SL's in game. 

Not sure how many Ops you've attended now - but the last 2 or 3 run, have been fairly low-key as most folks are on Christmas break - hence the casual nature of joining/slotting in/planning. Typically there is quite a bit more structure behind how thing are planned on the night. If you're attending this Sundays OP, you'll see how things are generally run :).

Hi JEFRO. A few weeks ago this is exactly how we use to setup our ops (e.g. see here). However, we decided that it would actually be easier and less hassle to leave specific role selection up to people on-the-night rather than deciding beforehand. Here's a snippet of notes from our discussion on this (see bold text):

General Operation Start Rules
- Give out server pass 30 minutes early - post on forum and put in TS channel desc. (viewable by members only).
- If any players are not ready by op start time, they then become a JIP player.
     - We DO NOT wait. If we wait for one, we'll have to wait for another.
- Mission slots not decided/set beforehand (except for LEADERS who state on the op post which team they wish to lead. They turn up 30 mins early for op). 
     - Prevents fragmented/half-empty sections (since we don't wait for people).
     - Creates balanced teams.

I tended to like the older role selection method :P - but that's purely a stubborn personal preference :P...aaand granted the current method we have seems to be working as intended - so I really can't complain :). Give it a crack on the night and see what you think.
