Game recording software: My pick

When looking for recording software, these are the features I absolutely need:
  1. Can record using Nvidia NVENC H.264 encoder (offloads encoding from CPU to GPU).
  2. Able to record game audio and mic audio as separate tracks (makes editing easier).
  3. Can save/record the last X minutes of gameplay (aka replay buffer).

Almost all recording programs out there have at least one of these features, but not all.
  • Dxtory can do feature 2, but not 1 or 3.
  • Shadowplay can do feature 1 and 3, but not 2.
  • Bandicam can do feature 1 and 2, but not 3.
  • Fraps can do feature 3, but not 1 or 2.
  • OBS Studio can do feature 1 and 2, but not 3.
  • OBS Classic can do feature 1 and 3, but not 2.

Just when I had given up hope finding a program that could do it all, I remembered one dark horse (and it's not even well-known for it's recording abilities):

MSI Afterburner

It can do all three of the mentioned features. This will from now on be my go-to program for recording games. At last I've found one that does everything I want it to.

really, how do you setup the encoder and replay buffer?

EDIT: Never mind, found it, the replay buffer doesn't seem to work for me though. And i can only export in .mkv when using NVENC, which Sony Vegas doesn't like.

Yep, I had exactly the same problem too, so I made a script that wraps it in .mp4. Since .mkv is just a container for the file, there is no loss of video quality when wrapping to a .mp4 (most conversion programs will attempt to convert the file, resulting in a loss of quality).

Here's the script (right click > save as):
MKV to MP4 script

How to install
  • Make sure Python 3.x is installed [Download].
  • Download FFmpeg and extract it somewhere on your PC [Download].
  • Open my script in notepad and point ffmpeg_path to the location of your ffmpeg.exe.

Now just drag and drop any .mkv file onto my script and it will make a .mp4 copy in the same folder of the original file.
I keep the script on my desktop so its easy to find.

GET OUT OF MY MIND JAIMIE!

I was actually going to prepare another post similar like this. It will go into further detail of what you "should" record and editing etc. :)

There is no war to end all wars.

Our minds are one.

But yeah a post on what to record and how to edit would be good :)
